Gless was born on May 31, 1943 in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of Marjorie and Dennis J. Gless, a housewife and a sportswear manufacturing executive. She grew up with two brothers, Michael and Aric, and the three of them were raised Roman Catholic. Neil McCarthy, Gless' maternal grandfather, was a prominent Los Angeles attorney with a large clientele of film actors. Looking to become an actress, she sought her grandfather's advice, but he wasn't supportive as it was a "filthy business". However, years later, he would give her $150 for her first acting class. With that, she went to class at night while working as a secretary during the day for advertising agencies and independent movie production companies.
Gless' acting career began in the 1970s. She has gone on to appear in many television series and films since, Nip/Tuck, Burn Notice, Marcus Welby, M.D., Switch, Cagney & Lacey, The Exorcist , and Adoptable, to name a few.
In 1991, at the age of 48, she married Barney Rosenzweig, the creator of Cagney & Lacey, a series in which she starred in. The two are still married to this day.
- She has appeared in Burn Notice, another show created by Matt Nix, along with Coby Bell and Garret Dillahunt.
